The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) announced on its website on Wednesday that it has appointed Yaya Toure, formerly of Belgian club Stendard Liege, as head coach. Yaya Toure, who impressed fans as one of the world’s best defensive midfielders during his playing days at Barcelona and Manchester City, has left his role as head coach of Stade Liège to join the Saudi national soccer team to assist Roberto Mancini, who was a priest at Manchester City.
Yaya Toure is well on his way to coaching after retiring from active duty in 2020. He has served as head coach at Olympic Donetsk, Yakhmat Grozny, and others, and was the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth team in the 2022-2023 season. He was linked with Stendard Liege for the 2023-2024 season, but changed jobs again after just a few months.
“I wanted to join Mancini’s important project, and leaving Stade de Lyon was a difficult but right choice for me,” Yaya Toure said on social media. “For the first time in my career, I have the opportunity to work in a Muslim country, something I have always wanted to do,” he said, adding that religious issues were also a factor in his decision to move to Saudi Arabia.
